Zach Sobiech, at 14 years old, found out he had a rare form of terminal cancer. So he became a rock star, and millions of people got to see his music before he passed away Monday, May 20, 2013. Angela Lee Duckworth studies achievement and participated in a fantastic TED Talk. Most psychologists in her field study intelligence, but that’s only part of the story. Duckworth, rather, at the University of Pennsylvania, studies intangible concepts such as self-control and “grit” to determine how they might predict both academic and professional success. She studies if perseverance can be taught. Grit is “one of the key and necessary achievements in any field,” as she puts it.

The Minnesota Vikings welcomed former Minnesota Gophers WR Connor Cosgrove as a guest to their 2013 rookie minicamp. Cosgrove was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2010 but has remained an inspiration to the Gophers and the Twin Cities community. Now, he’s introduced to the national stage.

Coach Leslie Frasier and GM Rick Spielman welcomed Cosgrove with open arms, giving him a personalized brand-new jersey, and mentioning reigning NFL MVP Adrian Peterson doesn’t even have one yet.

After Day 3 of the 2013 NFL Draft wrapped up on Saturday evening, Seahawks GM John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll spoke with the media on another great draft class.

When one reporter approached Carroll with a question regarding his philosophy and competition, Coach was happy to answer. “The standards that you set and the expectations that you demand, is what calls players to play at their best,” Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll says. “Regardless of what it looks like, we have the exceptions to play great football, and the standards that it takes to do that are set daily. Check out Coach Pete Carroll talking to newly-acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin today, who Coach has dubbed the Seahawks No. 1 pick for the 2013 NFL Draft. “It’s a blessing,” Harvin says to be a No. 1 pick twice. “I’m glad to be here and looking forward to taking full advantage of the situation.”
