At WinForever, we talk a lot about owning a personal philosophy. At a recent Nike WinForever Workshop, Coach Pete Carroll spoke on how he developed his personal philosophy.
Quite simply for Carroll, fortunately, he got fired. Twice. As an eternal optimist, that’s an extremely positive thought for someone overcoming an obstacle like that.
As Carroll addressed, the last time he got fired, he realized he needed to get his act together–especially because he still didn’t know who he was after coaching for all those years.
He asked himself some serious questions, like “what do I want to eat in the pre-game meal to how I define myself. And fortunately for myself,” Carroll said, “I came to some decisions.” He started writing these decisions down and filled out notebooks after notebook. “Out of that came a mentality that represents the truth of my heart and what we’re all about—I’m a competitor,” Carroll told the excited audience.
